I have to chime in on this to disagree with this statement in a way. If when you attend a national event you just "do your own thing" it is true that you may not connect with others as you might on a local level. However, if you are active in the association, are on committees and boards, you make incredibly wonderful connections. Since I've retired people ask me why I still attend ALA conferences and my answer is always "that's where my friends are." You get out of an organization what you put into it. So when the call goes out for people to volunteer for committees or you are asked to run for a position, say yes. You won't regret it. The time I spent with the AASL Board were the best years I had as a professional. I can remember at one board meeting looking around and listening to the discussion and wishing I were 30 years younger and just starting out so I could take advantage of all the wisdom and intelligence around me.
