I'm in a K-5 school and I encounter this sort of thing from time to time. Not too often - many of the parents either aren't interested or aren't literate in English so they don't know what's in the books. My school is Title I and we serve a first generation or just arrived Hispanic population When one of "those" parents come in I always compliment them for being so involved and interested in their children's education (hey it's sorta true!). I tell them while I have read many of the books in the library, I've not read them all and I wouldn't want to suggest something you're not comfortable with. The library is open to parents every morning prior to school and after school ends and on Thursday nights. Why don’t you come in then and you and your child can select some books together. I can make you a library card and parents can check out up to ten books. That puts the monkey on their back and gets it off mine. They often will come in for a time or two and then decide that they are too busy to micro-manage their child's reading.
