Here are the replies that I received concerning an alternative to a date due
stamper. Thank you to all that replied.

*I tell the students when the books are due, and send an email if books are
more than one week overdue. I haven't used a date stamp of any kind in
years, and have no more overdue books than I ever did. For middle school
classes (I'm grades 6 - 12) I send a monthly list of checked out books to be
posted in the English classes.

*We still stamp cards.

*We have date stamps from "the Library Store" and "Highsmith" and both are
available online

- do a search for date stamp -

*We LOVE our receipt printer. It is a big price up front, but just paper
later. We have finally got the kids used to looking at the receipts and
they use them as bookmarks. It works very well.

*I started stamping books when I was first a librarian, way back, ten years
ago! But I just tell the kids to bring their books back every day! It builds
a responsible attitude, and they come at least every other week, or when the
whim hits, so I don't bother with overdue. I do however make a point to tell
the kids when a book is a one day check out as for reference books.

*In middle & HS we use a date due labeling gun that pints the date on
stickers which we put on the front cover--they are removable. Demco,
Highsmith etc. have these. Elem. we use due date stampers & stamp
pads--kids stamp their own.

*I use a date due slip and a rubber stamp.

*What program do you have? Destiny has a date due slip you can print on your
Regular printer...or failing that have one of your student helpers make a
Table with date due slips and have them change it every day and print them
Out on regular paper and chop them up

*I am combining old and new technology. I stamp the date with the old
stamper [the vendors still sell them] on the date due sticker that is placed
on top of the security tag. It is kind of clumsy, but so much cheaper than
the printer label machine.

*I use self-inking stamps for our property stamps and date due that a local
shop sells. We just use an ink pad and a hand stamp that's good for about 6
years. I just roll the new date everyday and we are good to go

And it lasts a long time.

*We use a $5.00 date stamp (ink pad needed) and scrap paper.

*We use old cards from the old card catalogs. We cut them in half long ways
and use a date stamper. Most of our kids use it as a bookmark, always a
plus!

*We just use colored unlined index cards and a banded stamper like you can
get from Demco or Highsmith. We put out quite a few cards per day, but they
stamp quickly and it is an easy job to have for your volunteers or student
aides. We use one side up per year, X out the old side and our cards last
for two years. Pretty cheap and easy. I'm not yet ready to do away with date
due cards even though I usually see my students once a week. When they hit
the middle school, date due cards will be important as they do not have
scheduled library classes at that level.

*On new, unprocessed books II do not put in pockets, etc. I use good quality
blank sticky notes on which to stamp the due date. I personally dislike
checking out books with no due date and feel it is unfair to expect students
to remember what I cannot without a ref erence.
