Thank you for all of your suggestions! ~Alison I"ll be doing Library Survivor with my 4th and 5th graders from stretch y library lessons (I think it's the second lesson book) For my fourth graders I'm going to do a "new" theme, since they study New York State this year. I haven't totally formalized it my mind yet, but I'm thinking they will select something "new" such as New Jersey, New York, NY Giants, New Zealand (etc...) and research some interesting facts and we'll make a display for my back to school BB, Look What's New (or something like that). If you have ideas to tag onto this, feel free to send them my way. Also, I don't have anything new for my third graders, so if you get some good ideas for third grade, would you mind sharing? Good luck with the new school year! For 3rd graders I've been reading Stella Luella's Runaway Book. They get a review of where everything is located in the library and then have a map with a map key to color in the various parts of the library. 3rd graders get a little excited when they learn they can check out 3 books this year. For 4th graders I'm tying it in to their knowledge of genres. We review genres and then I read Library 'Lil and most are getting a kick out of it, especially when read with expression. We talk about where this fits and very few have figured out "tall tales" even though they can name tons of other genres-- some pulled out of the air. We then play "cash-strapped library," which is just a Power Point library orientation asking a few questions about book checkout, location, and using Destiny. I bring them up to chairs 3 at a time and they have to discuss the answer together before they say it. So far they are enjoying it (I connect it to Cash Cab from the Discovery channel).
