In Arkansas all certified teachers (media specialists included) are required by law to receive a 30-minute duty-free lunch period as well as the equivalent of 1 class period per day for conference/prep-time. The state department's standards and assurances division will cite a district that does not provide the required times. I am in charge-by myself- of a high school library that serves 1600 students plus another 100+ staff. I too have 2 choices--have a job or not. I am so jealous of those of you who have more than one librarian or an assistant. You get to do all those great Web 2.0 things and collaborate with teachers. I'm lucky to get my books shelved once a week. Luckily I LIKE shelving. The reality is you do what you can, when you can. You get used to doing everything with interruptions and being dead tired at the end of the day. Thanks heavens I still love the kids and being a librarian--I helps keep me going!
