The following are responses to my post on how to recognize student book donors. Do you have any newsletters at your school? Or how about morning announcements? Margaret P. Simmons, MLS Middle School Library Media Specialist The June Shelton School 15720 Hillcrest Rd. Dallas, TX 75248 972-774-1772, Ext. 254 msimmons@shelton.org<mailto:msimmons@shelton.org> We just put book plates in the front of the book. "This book was donated to XYZ library by John Doe" Rachel Kerr Library Media Specialist Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School Cheektowaga-Sloan UFSD Actually we made our own using a software program. We just printed them out on adhesive backed paper and pressed them into the front of the books. Another suggestion is to use blank book plates (available at library suppliers and places like B&N stores). Just add the student name and date and glue into the cover of the book. We used large address labels to indicate that books in the collection were donated by our PTO. Once again we used Word and added the information and date to the labels. The labels were stuck into every book in the set of books (e.g. president biographies) donated. Hope this helps, Josephine Dervan, MLS -Adjunct Instructor School of Communication and Information Rutgers University dervan at optonline.net I am sure you probably thought about this but there are book plates you can purchase to put inside a book from Highsmith or Demco for book donations. Another idea that I have heard is to set up a display that says John Doe's Picks or something like it. But I have found that often just by placing the book plates inside the books, another person will check out the book and see the plate and they in turn will donate a book so their name appears inside one as well. Brenda Lemon [blemon@473mail.net] Do you have a student newspaper? If so give them a credit there, everyone likes seeing their name in print. Then add a bookplate with the donor's name and an option for a message such as "in honor of..." Elizabeth Varley [Elizabeth_Varley@wmsde.org] We place a book plate that we create and print on label paper inside the front cover of the book. Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 (630) 942-6691 diane_mankowski@glenbard.org<mailto:diane_mankowski@glenbard.org> You might try displaying the book with a donated by sticker in the front and reminding the kids to check the donation table. Mary Taylor Reed Elementary / Thomas Middle Schools Holdenville, OK mtaylor@holdenville.k12.ok.us Besides book plates inside the books, Rebecca, do you have room for a bulletin board? If you have a lot, you could make the pictures small but make a donor tree and then attach pics of the book covers with the donor's name listed below it. Or even have the student pose with the book and get shot of them to put on the tree.
