I have had an elementary blog for a couple of years now. It is easy to provide the access (our district trains teachers and then you set it up), but getting student participation is tougher. My blog is open to students 4-6th grades, but I've even had former students post. I moderate it so, nothing shows publicly unless I approve it. Finding opportunity for students to participate seems to be the hardest part. Students who don't have Internet at home are allowed to come to the library during Study Hall and post to the blog if they like. I have learned that planning with the teachers and having them on-board makes all the difference. When they are participating, too the students are much more active. We are going to make this part of the 5th/6th grade Language Arts teacher's Wednesday Warm-up activity this year. She will do the modeling during the first quarter, and then after that it will be like a center. We'll see if this works better over time. She did and she loved it - although it got away from her at times as students went off topic. Also some did not have internet access at home and so couldn't participate. I want to use one this year too, but as an elementary media specialist I'm not sure how it would look. Do I just give access to it to to those who say they'd post to it? Any ideas? I've looked at many of them out there for ideas. I looking for suggestions from people who've had one. What kind of service do you use to host your site? What is the easier work with? I know there is blogger, wordpress, and many more. Thanks for any input!
