Hi Pat, I have a student blog aimed at my 3rd-5th graders. I set it up a few years back when I became a librarian. It's definitely been a work in progress and a labor of love. Since I'm not that tech-savvy the the learning curve was a tad steep for me but I have improved through the years. I post about books I have read, events taking placing in the library, pictures relevant to the library, and I create book trailers so I post them there as well. I currently have a post on Favorite Authors: Summer Reads and have a few authors write in to tell me about their summer reads. I try to be creative with my focus always being to try to get kids motivated to read and pick up books they may not otherwise consider. The hurdle is getting kids to be active participants. They have little access to computers and most do not own computers. By the time I get their passwords and set up their e-mail accounts it seems like half the year has gone by. I think with time it will all fall into place. This year my focus will on teachers. If I can get them to see the value of safe social-networking and using 2.0 tools and see it as a valuable writing tool, then I think they will be more apt to use it. I use edublogs. It is safe, free of ads, I can moderate all comments and most important - it's not blocked by the district. If anyone would like to use the blog on their campus I welcome all students. All they need is an e-mail. If you would like to see it go to- La Lucha Libro Library http://centeno.edublogs.org Cheers!
