Joni,

I think your principal might be thinking of the Birthday Book Club which
would help to increase the school library's holdings by allowing parents,
grandparents, or others to donate ($15 - $20) in honor of a child for their
birthday. The librarian uses the funds to purchase new books for the
library and the students are allowed to select the book that they would like
to be "their donation" to the school library--- a book in their honor---
with a bookplate added with the child's name in the book. Often the child
also is able to be the first person to check-out the book --- lots of pride
when they see their brand-new book added to the school's library for others
to read.

Here are some links to more detailed programs that might help you. I would
suggest that you share this information with your principal and ask her to
support you in the building of your school library's collection through the
Birthday Book Club project! (I always donated to my children's school
libraries when they were younger---my oldest is now 25 years old, so the
Birthday Book Club has been around for a while now!)

Good luck---- here are the links:

"It is more than ironic that school districts are willing to spend
hundreds of thousands of dollars on reading programs and staff
development which have had limited success in boosting test scores,
but are unwilling to invest in school library programs that show direct
correlations to student success."
