Dear Joni, We do a program like you the one are describing in the 3 elementary schools in our district. The funds come from the PTA. They run the spring book fair and take either cash or Scholastic dollars to purchase books at the warehouse sale. We get a list of student birthdays in chronological order from our student software program. The library aide is responsible for writing out a bookplate for each student and typing a list of the week's birthdays, which is read during morning announcements. Students then come to the library to choose their book. The students love coming in for their birthday books. I have a box for grades 3-5, 1-2 and a separate box for kindergarten. Kindergarten gets theirs during class. We do the summer birthdays as a big group. For instance, this week we did June birthdays today and will do July and August on the next 2 days.
