Classics to Recommend?

An 8th grade reading teacher at our school would like a list of classic
literature to suggest to her students along the lines of "what you should
have read by the time you get to high school."  Not knowing of such a
list, given today's emphasis on diversity and relevance, I would like to
throw the question out to all of you LM_NETTers :-).  Naturally, I have
some personal opinions, but would also like your input.  If two heads are
better than one, surely thousands of heads  will yield even greater
results!  Perhaps sending directly to me would be helpful in keeping
mailboxes uncluttered and I will then post results.  Thanks in advance.
