Satellite Town Meeting Announcement PLEASE JOIN SECRETARY RICHARD RILEY FOR THE GOALS 2000 SATELLITE TOWN MEETING TUESDAY, APRIL 19, 1994 8:30pm Eastern time "MATH AND SCIENCE EDUCATION" On Tuesday, April 19th, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and Deputy Secretary Madeleine Kunin will host the Department of Education's GOALS 2000 Satellite Town Meeting, a live, interactive video teleconference for communities working towards the National Education Goals and comprehensive reform in their schools. This month the town meeting will focus on ways that schools and communities can work in partnership to improve mathematics and science education. Riley and Kunin will welcome a panel of teachers and other educators, as well as community and business leaders from around the country. Their discussion will include why U.S. stduents need to learn more mathematics and science, as well as how innovative schools throughout the country are using more hands-on, real-world, problem-solving approaches to teach these subjects. The April Town Meeting will also discuss the GOALS 2000: Educate America bill which was signed into law on March 31st. A special video segment is scheduled featuring business involvement in math and science education and the Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GREEN). Sponsored by the department and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the town meeting offers viewers the opporutnity to call a toll-free 800-telephone number to talk with the Secretary and his guests. Each month, educators, business leaders, parents and other participate in the town meeting at downlink sites in hundreds of community meeting around the country or watch the event at home on local public access television. HOW DO I PARTICIPATE? If you are interested in participating in the Satellite Town Meeting, the first step is to call 1-800-USA-LEARN and ask if there is already a downlink site and community meeting close to you. If not, start your own meeting! - Find a location that has satellite capabilities. Some ideas include: school buildings and community colleges; community centers; local cable access stations; chambers of commerce; and Wal-Marts and Sam's Clubs. The satellite coordinates follow this message. - Invite a broad-based groups from your community interested in math and science education. In addition to school officials, teachers, parents, and community leaders, you may want to invite representatives of local employers in the math, science, environmental and engineering fields; laboratories or scientific research firms; and science and mathematics faculty from area institutions of higher education, among others. - Call 1-800-USA-LEARN and let us know you are participating so that your names can be included in the "scroll of participating communities."
