Hi Michele! This is an interesting question. Some of the parents in our
school District have asked for night opening of the Resource Centres,
particularly the ones like mine which are well stocked with computers etc.
I have no experiences to relay to you, but I would appreciate reading the
responses you get from others who have had experience with night opening.
If you could forward the responses to me I would appreciate it.
Thanks!

My district has no policy on being open at night. However, I try to open the
LMC in the evenings during peak times during the grading period. This is
totally on my own volunteer time, but it does afford the opportunity to get
caught up on things. Also, the kids that show up really want to use the LMC,
which is a nice switch from many of my 'regular' patrons. Some of the best
students find the evening hours useful since they have no times during the
school day to come in.

If I were developing a policy from scratch, I'd be sure to address the issue
relative to
my own situation, I'm a little
concerned that since there is no official recognition or policy, may there be a
liability problem?

What a surprise to hear from my old hometown high school. I graduated from
Appleton High in 1957. Actually, the POOR library services there were one of
the contributing factors in becoming a librarian. If you scheduled yourself
with 6 classes (no study halls) your only access to the library was from 8:00
to 8:10 in the morning, unless a whole class went during classtime. Obviously
things have changed. I have had evening library hours for three years through
a Chapter One grant. I cover one night, my secretary(who is a college graduate
with a degree in education) covers the other. We are in a small town and the
school is the focal point of the community so there are lots of other things
going on at night: play practice, various musical things, adult ed classes, and
often the keyboarding lab is open as well. There is no administrator on duty,
but there are always several teachers and a custodian in the building. We have
never had a problem. We also have less use than you. I am retiring this year
and I don't know if my successor will be willing to continue offering this
service. Look forward to hearing from you. Ann Kuebbeler, La Junta High

Michele,
We have had our Media Center open Monday through Thursday srom 3:30
until 4:30 and from 6:00 until 8:00. We have been running about 25
students per day (10% of our student population). We have been very
happy with the project. There is no administrator on duty at night. We
have a staff rotation set up and the people who monitor the media center
and computer room are paid out of contract rates for hourly work. We do
not always have a certified librarian on duty. We have trained several
of our teachers to handle most of the requirements and it has worked very
well.

Dear Michele,

I read your letter with interest. First, I went to college Appleton.
But years ago there was only one high school. Now my daughter is a
senior in high school and is looking at colleges. Lawrence is her first
choice and the decision has to be made this week. Among areas of
consideration is the community in which the college is located and she
likes Appleton. She's been there three times including my 25th reunion
two years ago and a 3-day weekend a month ago. Brrrrr.

Secondly, your question concerns evening librarians. I am the evening
librarian at a local high school so can answer some of your questions.

We are open t,w,th evenings--6 to 9 pm. I am a certified librarian
looking for a full time job. I substitute teach during the day. I have
two student workers working for me and they are paid min. wage. We
probably average 15 kids a night coming in. Last fall we frequently had
35 per evening but model UN club was also meeting in the Library for

research. Besides serving the evening patrons, we have a few regular
chores we do--check in any remaining books, shelving (usually most for
the day), cleaning up the daytime trash in the library, reading the
shelves. We ocassionally change the bulletin board and I try to get to
the vertical file from time to time.

One down side of our situation is lack of communication between the day
time people and the evening. I wish that were better organized. Often I
feel left trying to figure out what is going on, i.e., a stack of books
on impressionist art on the end of a table. Was it for a class? Will
they need it tomorrow also? Or do they want them put away?

I would appreciate hearing back from you regarding your situation in
Appleton. Thanks. Barb.

Michele,

I keep our library open 2 nights a week for 2 hours, from 6:30 until
8:30. During that time I have anywhere from 3 to 100 students, depending
on whether an assignment is due. I staff it at a much reduced hourly
rate. It was traditionally done that way by a previous librarian so I
agreed. Now I wonder if I was wise. I thought I would use that time to
get my work done that I cannot seem to do during the day, but on busy
nights, I hardly get to sit down.

I also keep Saturday School so students can use the library on Saturday
from 8 until 12. All of those extra hours do add up to a tidy little
sum even if the hourly wage is not the same as daytime hours.

Of course, on very slow nights and quiet Saturdays, I *do* accomplish some
things.

Oh yes, Michele, I forgot: There are no administrators at night, but
because of adult ed there are very many other people in the building.
Several custodians are also there. I have more "good" students than
"bad" so I feel pretty confident that if I were to have a problem, I would
have support from the majority of students in the room. I've never felt
uneasy or afraid. We do have a principal on duty on Saturday morning.

We kekpt our h.s. media center open two nights a week for a trial period
last year. The staff shared the duty and came in at noon that day and
stayed until 8:00. After looking at how often it was used after supper, we
decided to not use that schedule this year. Normally we stay open until
5:00, which seems to help most people who need to use computers and
materials. It also provides a place for students to do homework who are
waiting for late practice. We also open before 7:30. We do this by having
one associate (noncertified) come in at 7:20 and stay until 3:20 while
another associate comes in at 9:00 and stays until 5:00. These associates
can help in both the h.s. and elementary media centers which means helping
supervise the mac lab which is in the h.s. media center.

Blue Earth Area high school has around 850 7-12 students.

My library has extended hours 4 days
  M-W 4-6
  Th 7-9

Student population: 1600

Additional Library Media Specialist and support staff (1 clerk): hired to cover
these hours

Use by students: Minimal

Projection for next year: Library will not have extended hours.

We have a decent Public Library. Students use it to seek out additional
resources. They use our Library heavily d
- 4pm.

Comments by students: If our Media Center and Writing Center/Computer Lab were
available , more use might be seen.
Access to our microform collection is in the Media Center. Staffing does not
allow for both main room and Media Center room of Library to be open. The
computer lab is another issue.

For the past twelve years my library has been open until 9 P.M. on
Monday and Thursday evenings. This is in cooperation with a local community
college which holds classes at the high school on those evenings. The
contract with the college requires that a school district librarian be
employed for those hours; that librarian is paid an hourly wage by the
college which is matched by the school district. In addition the college
pays an aide by the hour. The college also makes a contribution to our
annual book and periodical budgets.
I have been the librarian who works those evenings since the
beginning of the program, and I see these extended hours as very effective
use of the library. Use varies according to the time of the semester, extra-cur
ricular
events, etc., but it is usually a very busy place--especially until about
6:30 P.M. when the college classes begin and the high schoolers go home
for dinner. Checkout of materials is limited to the high school and college
students, but many middle school students come to use the resources on site.
There is no school district administrator on campus during those
hours, but it is clearly understood by the students that the same rules
apply during evening hours as apply during the school day and that
discipline referrals can be and have been written for evening
infractions. That has rarely been necessary. The community college does
have an administrative office open during those hours and provides a
security guard for the building.
I hope that your school district will be able to work out an
extended-hours program because it really benefits students who can't get
to the library during the day because of a full schedule of classes.

We open at night only 4 times per year, usually once a quarter. The librarian

a teacher working on a research unit stops by to help. An administrator is not
