Reference question

I have a patron who needs to know about a race (we think it was a
marathon) that happened in 1928.  The winner of the race was Andy
Payne/or Paine?  My patron needs to know how many days it took Andy to go
from New York to Los Angeles.  It was a race on Route 66 (possibly a
commemorative celebration).  I have looked in all my references at my
middle school library.  Help!  Thanks in advance.
