we are a grades 6-8 middle school, over 1000 students in very old
facilities. A couple years ago a board member proposed sending 6th grade
back to the elem. schools. There were "hearings" held at all of the
schools. During those meetings (which were well attended) there was not
one negative comment made about the middle school. Many parents
commented on how much more their children were getting out of the new
setting. Our PTA was very supportive and active. As a media specialist
I was very pleased that our media program got lot of attention as a good
reason to keep the 6th grade at the middle school.
Also, as a media specialist, I can say without a doubt that it has been
great working with 6th grade students; they are quite ready to face new
challenges and do very well with all we expect of them.
We can't separate 6th grade from the other kids totally, but with
scheduling there is quite a bit of separation. I think it's a great
age combination!
