Last summer I attended my high school class reunion and was reaquainted with our foreign exchange student from Germany. He is now a professor of psychology at the University of Marburg. We exchanged e-mail addresses and have been enjoying a constant stream of communications. Each one from him contains some type of reference question for me. For example, he had read the term "dead ringer" and wanted to know the origin. That was easy. His latest question has me stumped. I know some LMnetter can help. His question: "What happened to the tablets on which the original Book of Mormon was written. The Mormons must have an explanation, I am sure. I am certain that they must have either magically dissolved or had to be destroyed on God's command - but what's the story behind it?" My reference collection only said that witnesses (one source said three, another eleven) "testified that they saw the plates and the angel who gave them to Joseph Smith. Nowhere could I find what happened to them. Perhaps, as my friend suggested to me, "I wouldn't be surprised if the divine command about the handling of the plates was contained in the Book of Mormon itself." Please send responses to me at sequoyah_jhs@solinet.net. Thanks in advance. Pat Pickard -- . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Patricia (Pat) W.
