An excellent reference book is Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard's AMERICA AS STORY:
HISTORICAL FICTION FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS, Chicago: ALA, 1988. It is an
annotated bibliography of books for 7th-12th grades divided by various
periods--I can't remember exactly what they are right now and don't have access
to the book. There is a plot summary, information about what historical
information is in the book, and suggested follow-up activities and projects to
go along with the book. Grade levels are given.
