listserv future?

This is a "what's she talking about?" question.  Last week I went
to a workshop on the Technology Access Network of Kentucky.
The presenter made the statement that listserves were
items of the past.  She said that all listserves were becoming
newsreaders rapidly.  Of course, my first thought was about
lm_net, nearest and dearest listserve I know.

My questions:  What's the difference?
                        Why the switch?
                         And are we?
