Well, here I am again, out of the loop, and in search of enlightenment! Why worry about keeping track of the number of materials a person signs out? More to the point, why limit the number of things a person may borrow? I didn't before I got automated, and I don't now. I also don't loan *anything* to people with overdues - other than that, the sky's the limit. (Shed no tears for the overdue-niks. They can use all the stuff their little hearts desire right here in LibraryLand - they just can't take anything away with them.) And once someone clears those overdues, the sky's the limit again. Just ask Angela, overdue queen of the 7th grade. She regularly has over a dozen things out, and "Sorry, Angela. I see an overdue here. Should I hold those for you until you bring it back?" works like a charm. After 3 months of this, she may well lose her crown. We make reserve collections when large groups of kiddos need the same pool of resources, so hoarding isn't an issue. And when the shelves are looking empty, it is ever so much easier to get a budget increase....
