The term gopher came about in three ways:

First: The gopher (animal) is the name of the University of Minnesota's
       school mascot where the gopher software was invented.

Second: It "go's fer" information hence the name "gopher".

Third:  It burrows through the Internet looking for information hence
        the term "gopher".
