 Subject: good news from UC Berkeley!

 This morning the Academic Planning Board adopted in
 full the recommendations of the Information Planning Group
 for the establishment of a School of Information Management
 and Systems to succeed the SLIS.  This means that we
 now move actively into designing and implementing a new program that
 meets the changing needs of libraries and other information organizations.

 We now proceed with (1) a dean search and (2) obtaining systemwide
 approval (necessary for all new schools, new degrees, name
 changes, etc.) and eventually into planning a new curriculum.

 This is excellent news!  The SLIS faculty and alumni association
 had earlier endorsed the IPG's proposal.

 MANY THANKS to all our supporters who aided our efforts to
 continue education in library and information
 studies on this campus.  Although some may have wished to see
 the existing School remain with only minor changes, that was never
 an option -- and not appropriate in a field that is changing
 so radically.  This new program
 will give us an opportunity to exercise leadership in a fast-changing
 information world.  Libraries will remain a part of the program
 (despite rumors to the contrary) but we will also address the
 exciting new opportunities for information professionals.
