Dear LM_NET Colleagues, I couldn't agree more with Mike Eisenberg (see below) that LM_NET members across the entire country, and around the world should contact Nancy Van House, the Acting Dean of the School of Library and Information Studies at U. C. Berkeley regarding the inclusion of an emphasis for school librarians in their new programs. School libraries should not just be given lip service, but a true emphasis, with energetic, technology-oriented professors of national prominence who come from a K-12 background. One of the reasons that school library programs have suffered and declined in California is that we have been abandoned by the entire University of California system and the California State University system, especially at U.C. Berkeley (except for San Jose State, a shining star for California school libraries, and Chico State, which has manitained a small but excellent school library media teacher credential program.) It has been decades since the California universities here have provided any true leadership. It is easy to see where it has led to: Decline in support for public libraries, and now, decline in support for academic libraries. It is amazing that they failed to see the connection!
