Many LM_NETTERS wished to know what answers people had come up
with regarding my query on countries where French is spoken.
The winning reply comes from Michelle, and here it is:

Hi Anne,
Just happen to have a map of the languages spoken in the world. It is
made by the Office of the Official Languages, of the Government of Canada
and the date is 1986. On one side is information about languages in
Canada and the other side is the world. Here is the list:
Canada
St-Pierre et Miquelon (belong to France)
Haiti
Saint-Martin
Guadeloupe
Martinique
French Guiana
French Polynesia
Mauritania
Senegal
Mali
Guinea
Upper Volta
Ivory Coast (The only country of the world beside France to request
diplomats who speak French for Ambassies)
Togo
Benin
Niger
Chad
Cameroun
Central African Republic
Gabon
Zaire
Congo
Rwanda
Comoros
Madagascar
Reunion
Seychelles
Kerguelen Islands
France
Switzerland
Luxembourg
Belgium
Wallis and Futuna
Vanuatu
New Caledonia

The last ones are from the islands of the Pacific and are listed by
groups. I notice that Tahiti is not there, though it is probably listed
with French Polynesia.
There are other countries where French is spoken, such as Mauritius, and I
guess it is either an oversight,or it is not predominant enough to be on
this map.
Hope this helps.
