WHICH WAY TO GO? Co-Sponsored by: Texas State Library and The University of Texas at Austin, Graduate School of Library and Information Science DALLAS, TEXAS JULY 27, 1994 HOUSTON, TEXAS JULY 28, 1994 AUSTIN, TEXAS JULY 29, 1994 This is a workshop for anyone responsible for managing DOS-based CD-ROM systems. Included will be an overview of currently available CD-ROM hardware, workstation requirements and CD-ROM LAN products (software that allows you to share CD-ROM equipment across your local area network). Although CD-ROM basics are reviewed, this workshop is intended for people who already have basic knowledge of CD-ROM software or hardware. It would be ideal for someone currently using CD-ROM and looking into future options. This is NOT a hands-on workshop. Participants will learn basic CD-ROM hardware configurations: Single drives Tower systems Jukebox systems Networked drives Participants will also learn how to compare different drives and models. You will learn guidelines for choosing workstations: Processor and speed Hard disk drives RAM In addition, we will cover an overview of CD networking products (geared towards IBM and compatibles). This includes discussion of some of the most popular products and their costs, such as: OPTI-NET SCSI Express LanCD Discport, and more . . . Doug Tremere, Computer Services Manager for Missouri Library Network Corporation, will present the workshop. Currently residing in St. Louis, Missouri, he spent three years as a user support specialist at the OCLC User Contact Desk. In 1991, he took the position of Computer Services Manager at the Missouri Library Network Corporation. In addition to directing workshops for MLNC, he has taught workshops for the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council, the MINITEX Library Information Network and the Counsil of Wisconsin Libraries. The Missouri Library Network Corporation is one of the largest distributors of CD-ROM equipment to libraries in the United States. Fee: $35 ($39 for late registration). Registration is limited, so early registration is advised. Check, purchase order, Visa or Mastercard is accepted. Fee includes breaks and handout material. Lunch on your own. Registration fees are used to support the UT-Austin GSLIS Continuing Education program. Deadline: All registrations or payments postmarked after July 12, 1994 are subject to a $4 per person late fee. Call to see if space is available. CEU's: A 0.5 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) will be awarded for attending this seminar.
