Apple lle ?

There is a library/media specialist in my county who has an Apple lle
with a modem card in slot 4.  She has DataLink 2400 software and modem card.
We followed the directions in the manual to get this thing going but
we only got as far as a high pitched sound (but no dialing of numbers).
Any tips ?  Also, the only emulations it seems to list are TTY and Smart.
Does anyone know if we are going to get into the Internet if we ever get the
modem card to work?  It seems to me that it must say VT100  to work.  Thanks ver
