I have a friend who has just moved to Springfield, IL. She has been offered
and decided to accept a half-time position as a school media specialist in a
small school district 22 miles from Springfield. This school has 480 students
in grades K-12. This year they will graduate 16. They have no library. The
closest thing is a classroom library one of the kindergarten teachers has set
up for her room out of her own funds over the years. There are a hundred or
two hundred books, mostly dating from the 1940's and 1950's stacked in a
corner that one of the teachers checks out to kids at the end of the day on
her planning period. There is no organization or cataloging at all.

She needs all of the advice and suggestions she can get about where to start.
She has been given a small budget (about $3000) for next year. Her first
concern, of course, is to start some type of reference collection. Any
creative ideas of how to go about getting materials for little or no money
will be appreciated.

This is a wonderful resource for all of us. I have gained so much from all of
you. After several of us spent some time brainstorming I told her I would go
to LM_NET and assured her that if you want ideas and help this is the place to
go!

Thank you in advance. Besides helping out 480 students and their teachers you
will be helping to calm a very anxious colleague!
