Found this Guide to Internet Resources for K-12 School Librarians on the Internet. Thought it might provide some useful informatin to some of you so I am posting it to the list. Hope its helpful! All commercial use requires permission. This guide is intended to list Internet resources of interest to K-12 librarians. It will include aspects of technology in a library, areas of Internet usage by librarians, general resources for K-12 student involvement in the Internet and K-12 library resources. It is not intended to be all inclusive but a partial listing. Included are listservs, freenets, telnet sites, FTP sites, gophers, FAQUs, and usenet newsgroups. LISTSERVS A listserv is an automatic discussion list. You may enter a subscription to a listserv to send and receive messages about a particular subject area. Check with your system administrator to find out if you will use Bitnet or Internet addresses. To subscribe to a listserv, send an email message to the host. Once you subscribe to a listserv, you usually get information and commands for that listserv. For example if you wanted to subscribe to CDROM-L you would do the following: To: Listserv@uccvma Subject: (Leave Blank) Subscribe CDROM-L Your Name To unsubscribe to a listserv, send an email message to the host. Example: To: Listserv@uccvma.bitnet Subject: (Leave Blank) Message: Unsubscribe CDROM-L ALAOIF This listserv comes from the American Library Association Us Office of Intellectual Freedom. Address: @lis.pitt.edu (Internet) - ----------------------------------------------------------- Freenets Freenets are community based bulletin boards with a variety of services available. In theory, they are essentially free to all users. Some do request a small users fee to become a registered user if you are not living in the state where the freenet is based. Others state that donations are excepted and even tax deductible. Some of the services available on freenets include email, information services, and interactive communications (usually you must be a registered user to access this service). Organization on a freenet is often based on a model town you can walk through, visiting the library, communications center, the public square and other areas. Cleveland Freenet This was one of the first freenets to be formed. It is usually very busy and there is a one hour time limit per visit. To access certain features you must be a registered user. At the Cleveland Freenet you will find many historical documents available, a electronic bookshelf which includes the Bible, Book of Mormon, the Koran, a World Factbook, an Encyclopedia of Cleveland History and Zen and the Art of the Internet. This freenet provides access to other Freenets both inside and outside the USA. Telnet: freenet-in-a.cwru.edu freenet-in-b.cwru.edu freenet-in-c.cwru.edu Youngstown Freenet Because of an overloaded system you can't get an account on this freenet right now. There is a one hour time limit per visit. Areas of interest on this freenet include USA Today Headline News, U.S. Supreme Court opinions and access to Academy One, a kind of electronic schoolhouse where kids can participate in all kinds of projects and activities. Telnet: yfn.ysu.edu Login: Visitor Heartland Freenet This freenet isn't exactly free unless you are a resident of Illinois. A $10 fee is requested for all other registered users. Users are limited to a 15 minutes per visit. Highlights for this freenet include a teen center which contains young adult book reviews and historical time lines. Telnet: heartland.bradley.edu Denver Freenet Much information that is health related can be found here. Users have a one hour time limit. Health related news groups can be read, a booklist on black culture is available, access to Academy One is provided, and it includes Street Beat Quarterly which is a forum for first hand perspectives on homelessness and poverty. Telnet: freenet.hsc.colorado.edu Tallahassee Freenet Users have a 40 minute limit per visit on this freenet. Some of the resources include documents for teachers and parents from the US Dept. of Education, access to Academy One, K-12 Newsgroups, Internet resources, Clarinet, an electronic newspaper from the UPI wire, and MECK Journal, an electronic monthly with articles of interest to librarians. Telnet: freenet.fsu.edu Columbia Online Information Network Access is very interesting on this freenet. Again, there is a one hour time limit per visit. This freenet is set up like most freenets but once you choose a site to visit you often are actually accessing a gopher. Useful information includes White House and congress documents, daily summaries from the White House, the health care reform agenda, and a U.S. Senate gopher. Telnet: bigcat.missouri.edu Buffalo Freenet Users are limited to one hour per visit. Useful information from this freenet includes the U.S. Budget, U.S. House of Representatives information, direct connections to library catalogs, and access to Academy One. Telnet: freenet.buffalo.edu Login: freenet - ----------------------------------------------------------- Telnet Sites Telnet is used for logging on to other computers on the Internet. When you login to another computer your keyboard allows you to access whatever services are available. Users can access telnet sites either by letter address or number address. If one doesn't work, try the other. NASA Spacelink Information about the history, current state, and future state of NASA and space flight is found at Spacelink. It also includes much information for classroom teachers concerning the space program, as well as lesson plans. Address: library.dartmouth.edu 129.170.16.11 CARL (Colorado Association of Research Libraries) CARL offers a wide variety of online texts, online book reviews, and a database on environmental education. Address: pac.carl.org 192.54.81.128 Kidlink Gopher Here you will find telecommunication projects aimed at 10-15 year olds. Also available is student computer art. Address: kids.ccit.duq.edu 165.190.8.35 Rutgers University Campus Information Network The CIA World Factbook, dictionary, thesaurus, weather and world news are available here. It is suggested users use Mosiac or Lynx if available. Address: info.rutgers.edu Martin Lugher King Jr. Bibliography This telnet site offers over 2700 bibliographic citations dealing with Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement. Address: forsythetn.stanford.edu Response: socrates Response: select mlk Big Sky Telegraph Many resources for K-12 educators are available here. Lesson plans on a wide variety of subjects can be downloaded. New users have to open an account which consists of name city, state, country, and you have to choose a password. Address: bigsky.bigsky.dillon.mt.us Login: bbs - ----------------------------------------------------------- FTP Sites FTP stands for file transfer protocol. It is a way to quickly transfer files from a remote computer to your own. You are able to list the files in a directory, and copy files back and forth between both systems. Usually a login and password are required. Often using using anonymous can be used for the login and your address is used for the password. LIBSOFT LIBSOFT contains files for library media specialists including Internet resources, reviews of some automation systems, and files to help librarians make use of the Internet. Address: ftp.cwru.edu (/herm/acsii) Username: anonymous Password: (Your Internet address) Scott Yanoff List Periodically Scott Yanoff puts out a list of new and changed resources on the Internet. It's very useful for finding what's new. It's simply, easy to use, and is menu driven. Many offer access to a wide variety of services of interest to K-12 students, librarians and teachers. Below is a starting list of gophers. Often gophers will list other gophers to explore and the circle widens. You may have to dig to find information on gophers and sometimes you need to add port 70 at the end of the address. Informsnet Services include CNN Newsroom, listserv information, a gateway to other gophers, telnet opportunities, ftp access, plus much more. Address: Informns.k12.mn.us 70 New York State Education and Research Network Another rich K-12 resource. Discussion groups are available here. Address: nysernet.org 70 ERIC This gopher offers access to ERIC documents, education related documents, and Ask ERIC, an Internet-based question and answer service. Address: ericir.syr.edu 70 University of Massachusetts K12 Gopher This gopher includes a list of educational gophers, telecommunication projects, some news services and listserv archives for LM_NET, EDNET, Kidsphere and K12 Administration. Address: k12.ucs.umass.edu 70 Education Gopher at Florida Tech Here you'll find information about classroom use of the Internet as well as many library gopher servers. Address: sci.ed.fit.edu University of Michigan Library Gopher This gopher includes news services, the original clearinghouse for subject oriented Internet resource guides, access to the New York Public Library, and the ability to search for Internet resources by type, location, and subject. Address: gopher.lib.umich.edu CNS Gopher This gopher site offers the ability to search gophers world wide, telnet, FTP, and Listserv sites, and ideas for curricular infusion of telecomputing tools. Address: cns.cscns.com Ohio Education Computer Network A gopher designed to be appropriate for use by K-12 students. Address: nwoca7.nwoca.ohio.gov MEMO Gopher A gopher for library/media and technology professionals. There is much useful information available here. Address: gopher.mankato.msus.edu CICNet This gopher includes both descriptions of and on-line links to select Internet resources of interest to educators. Address: gopher.cic.net University of Manitoba This gopher includes such things as publishers catalogs, Facts on File, library information, and resources extraordinaire. Address: gopher.umanitoba.ca - ----------------------------------------------------------- FAQ's FAQ stands for frequently asked questions. These are common questions frequently asked by newcomers which are collected into lists and posted. Education Gopher at Florida Tech This gopher contains a FAQ archive for many subjects including CD-ROM, and finding sources. Address: sci.ed.fit.edu University of Manitoba Here you will find 28 pages of FAQ's. Address: gopher.umanitoba.ca Veronica FAQ's about the searching tool Veronica are found here. Address:gopher nysernet.org 70 - ----------------------------------------------------------- Usenets Usenets are similar to listserv except that you don't subscribe to them. Instead they are subject oriented places where message or information can be posted instead of being sent to each person. In order to read or post news, you need a news reader. Check with your system administrator for further information.
