Freenets

Freenets are community based bulletin boards with a variety of services
available. In theory, they are essentially free to all users. Some do
request a small users fee to become a registered user if you are not living
in the state where the freenet is based. Others state that donations are
excepted and even tax deductible. Some of the services available on freenets
include email, information services, and interactive communications (usually
you must be a registered user to access this service). Organization on a
freenet is often based on a model town you can walk through, visiting the
library, communications center, the public square and other areas.

Cleveland Freenet

This was one of the first freenets to be formed. It is usually very busy and
there is a one hour time limit per visit. To access certain features you
must be a registered user. At the Cleveland Freenet you will find many
historical documents available, a electronic bookshelf which includes the
Bible, Book of Mormon, the Koran, a World Factbook, an Encyclopedia of
Cleveland History and Zen and the Art of the Internet. This freenet provides
access to other Freenets both inside and outside the USA.

        Telnet: freenet-in-a.cwru.edu
                freenet-in-b.cwru.edu
                freenet-in-c.cwru.edu

Youngstown Freenet

Because of an overloaded system you can't get an account on this freenet
right now. There is a one hour time limit per visit. Areas of interest on
this freenet include USA Today Headline News, U.S. Supreme Court opinions
and access to Academy One, a kind of electronic schoolhouse where kids can
participate in all kinds of projects and activities.

Heartland Freenet

This freenet isn't exactly free unless you are a resident of Illinois. A $10

monthly with articles of interest to librarians.

Columbia Online Information Network

Access is very interesting on this freenet. Again, there is a one hour time
limit per visit. This freenet is set up like most freenets but once you choose
a site to visit you often are actually accessing a gopher. Useful information
includes White House and congress documents, daily summaries from the White
House, the health care reform agenda, and a U.S. Senate gopher.
