Director of Multitype Library System

New York Metropolitan Reference and Research Library Agency (METRO), a
cooperative of over 250 libraries and library systems in the metropolitan
New York area, invites applications and nominations for the position of
Director.  METRO's mission is to facilitate and support libraries and
information organizations in their efforts to meet the research and
information needs of the 8 million people of the area.  Responsible to
the Board of Trustees, the Director provides strong leadership for a
staff of 18 headquartered in Manhattan and manages a budget of $2 million
(90% statutory state aid.)  The Director advises, makes recommendations
to, and assists in formulating policies with the Board of Trustees,
implements the Board's strategic plan, policies and directives, oversees
the agency's day-to-day activities, and serves as a liaison and advocate
from the membership to governmental agencies.  Director must be an
experienced fiscal manager, effective communicator, and demonstrate good
planning and leadership skills.  The successful candidate must have an
understanding of library automation and telecommunications issues;
experience in a professional member-driven organization or cooperative
with high participation and shared decision-making; at least 8 years of
professional library experience, at least two of which shall have been in
an administrative capacity, or equivalent experience; and an
ALA-accredited MLS degree.  Salary is based on qualifications and
experience with a minimum annual salary of $65,000 and excellent
