?High school/college resources on the Internet

I am introducing a class of first year college students to the Internet
on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at noon.  Can any of you suggest resources that would
be useful to these students?  Any subject--their professor wants them
to have some ideas about doing research.  Several of the tunnels I have
followed end up in dead ends, so I am interested in some easy-to-use
resources.  Many of the things your high school students use should
be useful for freshmen as well.
