Thanks to all the LM_NET colleagues that responded to my request. I got two different versions that I thought would be interesting to post. Date: Sun, 6 Nov 1994 07:17:06 -0600 From: Wilson L Breeden <wilsonb@tenet.edu> Jeanne, As I remember it: As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Each wife had seven cats, each cat had seven kits. How many were going to St. Ives? (Answer: 1 -- "_I_ was going to St. Ives.") If you get any variations, it might be interesting to others to see them. Date: Sun, 6 Nov 1994 00:04:23 -0600 (CST) From: Sheryl Lee <slee@esu3.esu3.k12.ne.us> Jeanne -- The poem you asked about is a Mother Goose Rhyme. I found it in *The Real Mother Goose*, illus. by Blanche Fisher Wright, publ. by Rand McNally, c1916 (again in 1944). Our book opened right to the page, as it was always one of my girls' favorites (they're now 12 and 15). It goes like this: GOING TO ST. IVES As I was going to St. Ives I met a man with seven wives. Every wife had seven sacks, Every sack had seven cats, Every cat had seven kits. Kits, cats, sacks, and wives, How many were going to St. Ives? Oh, that brings back such memories! >From R7MEDIA@WVNVM.WVNET.EDU Sun Nov 6 08:52:27 1994 Received: from WVNVM.WVNET.EDU (wvnvm.wvnet.edu [129.71.2.4]) by jove.acs.unt.ed u (8.6.9/8.6.4) with SMTP id IAA12328 for <jly0001@JOVE.ACS.UNT.EDU>; Sun, 6 No v 1994 08:52:25 -0600 Message-Id: <199411061452.IAA12328@jove.acs.unt.edu> Received: from WVNVM.WVNET.EDU by WVNVM.WVNET.EDU (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with BSMTP id 3827; Sun, 06 Nov 94 09:53:43 EST Received: from WVNVM.WVNET.EDU (NJE origin R7MEDIA@WVNVM) by WVNVM.WVNET.EDU (LMail V1.2a/1.8a) with BSMTP id 2331; Sun, 6 Nov 1994 09:53:43 -0500 Date: Sun, 6 Nov 1994 09:53:42 EST From: "Betsy Breiding" <R7MEDIA@WVNVM.WVNET.EDU> To: "Jeanne Louise Yarbrough" <jly0001@JOVE.ACS.UNT.EDU> Subject: Re: St. Ives In-Reply-To: Message of 11/05/94 at 18:12:29 from jly0001@JOVE.ACS.UNT.EDU Status: RO X-Status: As I was going to St. Ives I met a man with seven wives. Answer: just one - "I" was going to St. Ives, and everyone else was coming back! Someone has probably already answered you, but I couldn't resist. Betsy Breiding R7Media@wvnvm.wvnet.edu Date: Sun, 6 Nov 1994 14:58:16 -0600 (CST) From: Mary Ellen Scribner <scribner@tenet.edu> Three or four years ago I was at the University of Exeter with a group of librarians participating in a British Studies program. We had a Sunday off, and fourteen of us "rented" a driver and his fifteen-passenger bus. The driver was the best part of the deal! We had a wonderful day exploring Cornwall making many of our stops at the suggestion of the driver. Your inquiry about St. Ives triggered my memories of a frabjous day on which fourteen silly librarians rode into St. Ives singing: As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives, Each wife had seven sacks, Each sack had seven cats, Each cat had seven kits: Kits, cats, sacks, and wives, How many were there going to St. Ives? Thanks for the memory and enjoy!
