My administrator asked me why I want computers with CD capacity and a connection to the internet in my elementary library. She said, "can't the kid s do that from the computer lab?" I think I need to prepare a written statement which explains to someone who really does not understand. Can anyone help with articulate arguments? I need to explain that the library provides information in any (all) form(s); the advantages of reference sources such as encyclopedias and magazine indexes on CD; and I need to give some clear examples of how internet access FROM THE LIBRARY can help elementary level kids. This last is giving me some trouble - specifically, how have you used int ernet resources in a way that would be clearly most appropriate in the library? I want to argue that we need access from the library, from the computer lab, and from the classrooms (even the halls and the johns, why no?), but I want to emphasize that internet is just another medium for doing what libraries do best: provide information. I believe this administrator thinks of the library as a provider of fiction. Thanks in advance for your help. Please reply to me directly. -- Suzanne Cane Lincoln School Providence, Rhode Island 02906 e-mail: prLst012@LLwsbe.wsbe.org voice: 401 331-9696 fax: 401 751-6670
