The following info was provided to me by our IU Services (a tricounty
ed
unit). Perhaps it will be helpful.
=20
"The manual for Eudora can be found on our FTP server
(iu05trc.trinet.k12.pa.us). It is in both Word for Windows and text =
f
ormat.
The file names are 14manual.exe and 14manual.txt. To uncompress the
Word
version type 14manual, at the dos prompt, in the directory that the f=
i
le is
in. The text version can be imported into most word processors."

Information Technology has negotiated a site license for the
commercial versions of Eudora for Macintosh and Eudora for
Windows. The software is available to UC Davis students, staff and
faculty at no charge.
=20
The Eudora software can be copied with anonymous FTP at
www.ucdavis.edu:/dist/Eudora/Mac

Be sure to copy the 'Readme' files in these directories. They have
important information about how to copy and install the software.
=20
We anticipate a formal 'roll-out' of Eudora for the campus in
early Fall. You can copy and use the software now.
=20
You can purchase documentation from Qualcomm. The cost is $9.00
per manual. Please contact Jeff Jacobs at (619) 597-5019, (800)

These comments apply to the Macintosh version of Eudora.
=20
GENERAL:
-------
-Give Eudora extra memory by clicking once on the program's icon
(highlighting it) and then increase the suggested memory size by 100K
or
so. You can give even more memory if your system can spare it.
=20
-Make sure you have the latest copy of Apple's Modem Tool, as of this
date
that is v1.1.1. Don't rename the tool. It should be titled "Apple Mod=
e
m
Tool." If you rename the tool, the connect script will not work prope=
r
ly
for v1.2.x when you dial in. The symptom indicating that this has hap=
p
ened
is that you connect but then your screen seems to freeze with the mes=
s
age:
=20
                       "telnet 110/stream..."
=20
and the pendulum just waves back and forth.
=20
-Eudora v1.2.2 does not work properly if it is launched from a volume
which
is not the startup volume. You should upgrade to v1.3.1 which fixes t=
h
is
and other small bugs.
=20
TROUBLESHOOTING:
---------------
=20
1) Q: Eudora returns an error message along the lines of, "That pesky
MacTCP is acting up again."
=20
A: Your Configuration settings (located under the "Special" menu i=
n
 the
Eudora Program) do not accurately match your setup. If you are using =
a
modem to dial into the University, make sure that you choose
"Communications Toolbox" as your "Connection Method" in the Configura=
t
ion
section. If you are using Eudora over the network, you need to have
properly installed and configured MacTCP v1.1.1. Don't try to install
MacTCP while GateKeeper or other Extensions are running. Restart your
computer with the Shift key held down to temporarily disable all Exte=
n
sions
while you proceed with the installation of MacTCP. Make sure that you
install the correct version of MacTCP: if you are using a Macintosh w=
i
th
built-in Ethernet, or an Ethernet card, install the Ethernet version =
o
f
MacTCP. You also have to contact your System administrator for detail=
s
 on
how to obtain your own unique I.P. address before you can use program=
s
 such
as Eudora, Fetch, or TurboGopher.
Please take the time to read over the installation instructions
for
MacTCP which are posted on the "Jeeves" volume of the campus-wide
AppleShare File Server, "Room Service." To access Room Service, go to
the
Chooser, select AppleShare, scroll down and highlight the "CompCtr" z=
o
ne,
and select Room Service from the long list of machine names which app=
e
ars
in the right section of this window. Connect as "Guest."
=20
2) Q: Eudora says that it, "Could not load Communications ToolBox" wh=
e
n I
selected Communications from under the "Special" menu.
=20
A: If your Macintosh is running under System 6.0.x, this error mes=
s
age
indicates that you do not have the Communications ToolBox resources
installed into your System file, or that you have installed the
Communications ToolBox resources (maybe from a QuickMail Remote insta=
l
ler
disk, or from the Eudora Installer disk) but you neglected to add the
appropriate Communications Tool to your "Communications Folder," whic=
h
should be visible inside of your System folder. The IBX and Apple Mod=
e
m
Tools (plus many other Communications Tools) may be copied from the J=
e
eves
volume on Room Service, or from the "Software Upgrades" section of th=
i
s
bulletin board. If you have installed the Communications ToolBox reso=
u
rces
correctly on a Macintosh running System 6.0.x, you will notice a new =
i
con
complete with hammer & screwdriver gracing the bottom of your screen =
o
n
startup.
If you are using a Macintosh running System 7.0.x, the Communic=
a
tions
Toolbox resources are already built into your System. You should chec=
k
 to
make sure that any Communications Tool that you need has been placed =
i
nside
of your "Extensions Folder" which is located inside of your System fo=
l
der.
You may need to reinstall Eudora from the 1.3.1 diskette set to
correct these problems if they persist.
=20
3) Q: Eudora says, "Error involving Domain Name Server. Domain does n=
o
t
exist."
=20
A: You have entered your POP account information incorrectly. Go b=
a
ck
to the Configuration section under the "Special" menu and make sure t=
h
at
your account information is of the general form: user@midway.uchicago=
.
edu
In this example, "user" would be replaced by your unique i.d. If you =
h
ave

=AF=F5not yet applied for a user account, you will have to contact th=
e Busin
ess
office located on the third floor of 1155 East 60th Street in order t=
o
 fill
out an application. You may call 702-7161 for instructions on what yo=
u
 will
need in order to qualify for an account at the University of Chicago.
The "SMPT server" field should be filled in as: midway.uchicago=
.
edu
Check this setting as well when you are in the Configuration section =
u
nder
the "Special" menu.
=20
4) Q: Eudora tells me that, "Server not responding. Connection came u=
p
halfway and failed."
=20
A: The first possibility here is that your POP account information
has
been incorrectly entered. Please see the comments immediately above o=
n
 how
to change this field in the Configuration section.
The second likely cause is that your network is experiencing so=
m
e
trouble. You should contact the person in charge of maintaining your
network and report the problem.
=20
5) Q: Eudora returns the cryptic message: "Unable to connect with Mid=
w
ay.
Server says 'pop in use'"
=20
A: Your machine either crashed or disconnected suddenly while the =
P
OP
server was processing your mail for you. This processing continues on
its
own, and hence it appears that you are still using your account even =
t
hough
you have broken the connection. Academic and Public Computing clears =
o
ut
these orphan processes every morning. If you cannot connect after wai=
t
ing a
day, you should call the APC Hotline at 702-3111 and report the probl=
e
m.
=20
6) Q: Eudora reports: "I said PASS and the POP sever said -Err Passwo=
r
d
supplied for "userX" is incorrect." "userX" stands for your i.d. in t=
h
is
example.
=20
A: You probably guessed this one: you entered your Password incorr=
e
ctly.
Check the Caps Lock button to make sure that you haven't accidentally
enabled it and try again. You should connect fine on your next try.
=20
=20
PROBLEMS SPECIFIC TO 9600/14,400bps DIAL-IN USERS:
-------------------------------------------------
=20
When you purchased your high-speed data modem, or fax modem from t=
h
e
Campus Computer Store, Elek-Tek, or CompUSA, your were told that you =
w
ould
save money in the long run by buying a faster modem, that downloads w=
o
uld
be up to seven and eight times as fast compared to a plain vanilla 24=
0
0
baud modem, and that you would get much more out of telecomputing...m=
a
ybe.
While the above is certainly true, you need to keep in mind that t=
h
e
modem bank which answers incoming calls at the University of Chicago =
i
s
currently limited to 9600bps, as is also the case with national on-li=
n
e
services such as CompuServe, Prodigy, and Delphi. This doesn't mean t=
h
at
your modem is 'faulty' in some way if you have problems dialing in. I=
t
 does
mean that you are going to have to spend extra time configuring your =
m
odem
so that it can communicate reliably with the modem bank on this end. =
Y
our
manual probably states that your high-speed modem is smart enough to
auto-configure itself when it connects with a slower modem, and somet=
i
mes
this is actually the case. In this particular setup, however, we can =
a
lmost
guarantee you that unless you enter a special modem configuration str=
i
ng,
you will not be able to send and receive mail to midway using your
high-speed modem.
When you install Eudora for dial-in access, you will notice that a=
n
additional choice becomes active under the "Special" menu:
"Communications..."
If you open this you will find a window which controls the behavio=
r
 of
your modem when it is dialing into midway. Complete instructions on h=
o
w to
configure all of the settins in this window are covered in the "Elect=
r
onic
mail...a brief introduction" document which is contained in the "Quic=
k
Start" archive on this bulletin board, and which is available separat=
e
ly
=66rom Jeeves on Room Service.
Right now we will concern ourselves only with the pop-up modem men=
u
,
located just under "Modem Settings." High-speed modem users should fi=
r
st
check the pop-up menu to see if their brand of modem is listed -- man=
y
 are.
If not, one can try the "Generic V.32" setting, which will probably w=
o
rk
fine as long as your modem is only a V.32 modem and not a faster V.32=
b
is
class modem. If your modem is a 14,400bps V.32bis modem, you will nee=
d
 to
select the "Custom..." setting and for a
=20
-Supra V.32bis Fax Modem enter: ATS0=3D0V1E1H0X4N0
=20
-Global Village PowerPort Gold enter: AT&F%C1\J1\N4\Q0W1
=20
-Zoom V.32bis modem, with or without fax, enter: AT&Q6S37=3D9N0
=20
-Sportster Mac 'n Fax -- call us at 702-7500 for an update
=20
To find out what you are changing and why, read the "AT Commands" sec=
t
ion
of your manual closely. You should be able to piece together what we =
a
re
telling you here. In the above settings, 0 stands for the numeral zer=
o
, not
the letter o.
=20
If your modem is not listed above and you have no success creating yo=
u
r own
custom string, you may call either the APC Hotline at 702-3111 or the
Campus Computer Store Technical Support Group at 702-7500 for assista=
n
ce.
=20
7) Q: Eudora refuses to dial the modem (no lights flicker, or no conn=
e
ction
is ever made).
=20
A: First check the physical links in your setup. Is the modem cabl=
e
securely connected to both the modem and your Macintosh? Silly as it
sounds, double-check to make sure that the modem is actually turned o=
n
 (you
should see at least a couple of lights lit up); that you have connect=
e
d the
telephone wire to the correct port in back of the modem; and that no =
o
ne
else is on the phone during the time that you are trying to dial out.
You may have just been using another communication program such
as
MicroPhone, ZTerm, ARA, TeleFinder, SmartCom, VersaTerm (or what have
you)
that has initialized the modem in such a way that it is incompatible =
w
ith
Eudora in its present state. Try flipping the power switch on the mod=
e
m off
for a minute and then back on. This should clear any settings left ov=
e
r
=66rom the communications program you just quit.
Maybe you haven't quit the program and that's your problem: ano=
t
her
telecommunications program such as QuickLink II, FaxSTF, or ARA, is a=
c
tive
and has monopolized the use of your Macintosh's serial port. You need
to
either quit the other program, or make sure that you disable any
"auto-answer/receive fax" options that your fax software contains.
Sometimes you have to restart your Macintosh to clear the seria=
l
port, or you need to use the utility "CommCloser," which forces the s=
e
rial
port closed. "CommCloser" is located in the Software Upgrades section
of
this bulletin board, under "Telecommunications utilities."
=20
8) Q: The modem dials just fine, but nothing ever appears.
=20
A: It's possible that the proper script was not chosen from the Sc=
r
ipt
section under the "Special" menu in Eudora. Make sure that you have e=
n
abled
either the "UC Modem Script" if you are using an analog modem, or tha=
t
 you
have checked the "UC IBX Script" for use with university IBX dataphon=
e
s.
There may be nothing wrong with your setup. The fault may have
something to do with the answering modem pool. The power may have fai=
l
ed,
or the mail server may be down. Who knows? Your best bet is to try ca=
l
ling
back later, perhaps after another hour has passed, and checking for y=
o
ur
mail again.
=20
9) Q: My modem dials fine, I seem to connect with the modem pool, I g=
e
t a
progress dialog box of some variety or other, but then Eudora seems t=
o
hang.
=20
A: Your modem is probably a high-speed one and your current
configuration is not compatible with the modems answering on this end=
.
See our comments above; resign yourself to reading the manual that ca=
m
e
with your modem, in essence becoming your own expert; or call either =
t
he
APC Hotline at 702-3111, or the Computer Store Technical Support Grou=
p
 at
702-7500 for help with your setup.
=20
We're just a phone call away if you get stuck. :-)
=20
10) Q: When I am receiving mail messages that contain enclosures (fil=
e
s),
Eudora chokes and reports that the enclosure is "bad or misformed."
=20
A: Try setting flow control to XON/XOFF in the Communications win=
d
ow,
as described in the "Quick Start" documents.
