I remember being in Southern California working in a newspaper office.
Moments after the news came over the wire, a large number of jet
airplanes flew over in formation. We assumed wrongly that our nation was
under attack by a foreign power. We were very somber all weekend (even
though my husband and I personally had no particular use for JFK as a
person or a president) and were especially shocked after returning from
Church that next Sunday to discover that Jack Ruby had killed Oswald. It
was a time of great national shock, tragedy, and soberness. What we
feared most was that Johnson would be even worse than Kennedy and that
proved to be true. We are still suffering from his Great Society reforms.
