>Hello everyone, One of our 8th grade social studies teachers is planning >a discussion next week about the assassination of John Kennedy. As part >of his unit, he has asked his students to ask their grandparents, older >friends, or teachers what they remember about the day JFK died. (Their >parents too, if they were old enough at that time to remember!) He would >appreciate hearing from any of you or anyone in your school who remembers >where they were on that day, what they were doing, etc. Your messages >will be shared with all our students in a special JFK display. Thanks >for your help. sppp@strauss.udel.edu > >Sandra Phillips, Librarian >Dover Air Force Base Middle School >Hawthorne Drive >Dover, DE 19901 Hello_ My name is Bob Haack. I now live and teach in Lincoln, Nebraska. When JFK died, I was in the 4th grade in a small town in Iowa--Elberon. I remember my friend, Danny meeting me on the steps of the school and telling me that John Kennedy and the governor of Texas ( who I didn't know about at that time, John Conneley) had been shot. Our school was a two-room rural school and everyone stopped what they were doing as we turned on the TV to see what was happening. When the news announcers told us that JFK was dead (or probably dead--there seemed to be some conflicting reports early on), we were dismissed from school early. Later, on the day of the funeral, I remember that my teacher, who was a close friend of my mother's, came to our house and watched the funeral procession on TV. My mother and teacher were both crying. I will never forget this tragic part of our history. ==================================== Bob Haack - Library Media Specialist Ruth Pyrtle Elementary School Lincoln, NE bhaack@lps.esu18.k12.ne.us ============================
