Dear Netters, Our school district has cut all elementary library media specialists to half-time, without cutting the amount of contact time each has with students. Currently, they provide prep time for classroom teachers, and at half-time, do almost nothing beyond teaching -- no teacher/ curriculum support, no collection development, no processing of materials, ......you can imagine how much time you have left for all the behind the scenes stuff when you see 26 classes for 30 minutes each in 2 1/2 days. In addition, we're trying to automate!! I hope that "out there" is someone who works in a district with strong contract language in their negotiated agreement that somehow limits the contact time librarians are required to devote to direct instruction, or that recognizes the multi-task job description under which we operate, or that just might give us some ideas for creating unique language for ourselves in this new negotiating year. Any contributions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance! Laila Tedford JYMDLIB@acad1.alaska.edu (or Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School, 10014 Crazy Horse Dr., Juneau, AK.99801)
