TARGET:community service

One of our teachers is offering a choice of a research paper
or community service in lieu of a final exam for the course.
        She would like to know is anyone else has attempted
this and how successful it was. Specifically she is interested
in grading, standards, criteria and how to monitor actual
service activities. Thank you for any help you can give.
