computers and tech in schools

we have $700,000 to spend on technology/computers for a new high school
opening in the fall of '95. heated disputes are now arising over platforms
software etc.  i would like to get input about what combinations will work
for multimedia (incld video editing) prduction.  also we are divided over
the issue of the archiac "computer lab" what do people see as alternatives
to the "lab"..the school has a fiber optic backbone and we also are trying
to determine what internal network would be a judicious choice..so how
would YOU spend this money in order to get the most interesting and
workable tools into the hands of students.
