I chuckled when I read the poem....it is just as you say... However a great
book which does help explain some of they whys and wherefores of the
"english" language is  The Mother Tongue: English & how it got that way by
Bill Bryson, copyright 1990, Wm Morrow ISBN: 0-888-07895-8. The language as
we know it and speak it is such a hodge-podge of other languages and
modifications that people have tried to make to it, that it is a wonder that
any of us can speak it!!!
