Someone asked about new information involving Duncan's book Who Killed My Daughter? which was published in 1992. Since then a paperback version has been published with an afterword giving a few updates. The killer still has not been found even though some new information has come forward. Apparently it was featured on a January 1993 segment of Unsolved Mysteries. According to the afterword there is still difficulty getting the police to believe in the Vietnamese mafia connection. On another note: thanks to those who responded to me in regard to the challenge to Robert Newton Peck's SOUP. I attended the reconsideration committee meeting (along with the school librarian, principal, another teacher, and a representative parent). The parent (the one who filed the challenge) objected to numerous lines and ideas in the book (four pages worth of written objections). The basic complaint was that the book encouraged kids to be bad - play pranks, smoke cornsilks, tie people up, etc., and offered no redeeming values. Needless to say I disagreed. You'll be pleased to know that the committee voted unanimously to keep the book - it is used as a reading set in a 4th grade. The parent now has the right to appeal this decision in which case it will go to the school board. The principal seems to think she'll push it as far as she can - seems her child takes everything literally and tries everthing he reads! The e-mail messages in support of the book were wonderful. I took copies and the school librarian asked to keep them in her files. Validations from professionals can't be beat. Many thanks.
