Friends, I am posting this as a hit because it is a followup to a question I asked a couple of weeks ago. It is not technically a hit, because no one had a suggestion. People who responded asked me to post a hit. I asked whether anyone had developed an assignment which would introduce the Internet to high school students who were coming into the library for one class session. One person suggested that I work with the teachers to develop an assignment which would relate to class work, but this is a class in computer applications, so there is no "content,"and the teachers are not familiar with the Internet. I see this as a great opportunity! After a brief introduction to the Internet and gopher, students will split up into small groups (3 or 4 people), and each group will sit at an Internet station. Each student will be given a copy of a scavenger hunt using the UMAss K12 gopher, which is publicly available (gopher to k12.ucs.umass.edu and login as "guest"). Each student will answer one question. A hint will be given - the hint will probably be the "path." For example, since census information is on the gopher, one question asks whether there are more men or women in Massachusetts. If we had more Internet stations, the groups wouldn't need to be so large. As it is, there may be students who need to come back during free blocks to finish up. We'll see how it goes. If anyone else has something that works, there is surely interest in hearing about it in LM_NET-land! Ellen Berne The Winsor School Boston MA 02215 eberne@a1.mec.mass.edu
