TECH: Modems vs. Direct connect

The question has come up regarding, how many modems and phone lines are
enough. We are bypassing that situation by installing a 56kb line (modems
not needed for anything which is on a network which is connected to the
line). This line is capable of handling a large number of users at a
relatively fast rate. In our situation (state program where we pay a one
time charge of $4,000 for this line) this seems to be the best answer.
