I have just returned from a wonderful two-day institute at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. The topic is "Curriculum-enhanced " MARC records... I am quite excited about the possibilities. The senior MARC standards specialist from the Library of Congress, Randall K. Barry, did much of the presenting. A group of folks from the Northwest Ohio Educational Foundation have been working with the Library of Congress to facilitate some changes in the USMARC standars to accomodate curriculum a bit better.... examples: 1) First Indicator value 1 (Review) in Field 20 (summary, etc.not) New indicator value for identifying the text of reviews 2) First indicator value 3 (special audience characteristics) in Field 521 (Target audience Note) This is a new indicator value.... [This is great for such things as .. if an item would be great for.... vision-impaired, tactile learner, etc. 3)Field 658 (index term- curriculum objective) - this is an entirely new field in USMARC.... with great possibilities...examples: *national or state course of study, such as "Ohio Math Objective 1 whole numbers and fractions) * degree of correlation such as slightly correlated *source of the objective such as Ohio Department of Education I think all school library media specialists will see the enourmous possibilities of these additional indicators and tags. There will be a Distance Learning Program on this on September 11 and September 18... please contact Roger Minier, Director, Nowthwest Ohio Educational Technology Foundation, 1-800-966-9638 or 1-419-372-7033 . Roger has an e-mail address, but unfortunately I don't have it with me right now. There are even some stipends for some distance participants. This really is a wonderful program.
