To: Georgia Media Specialists and other concerned persons. FROM: Tony Pope Media Specialist, McHenry Elementary School; Rome, GA Chairperson, District VIII, Georgia Library Media Association DATE: December 2, 1995 I received a memo from our central office on Friday, Dec. 1, 1995 in regards to a new proposal to the State Dept. of Ed. to revise the Personnel Required Rule. If passed, this proposal: 1) eliminates all job titles but superintendent and principal. The impact will not only be felt by all central office personnel but all support personnel such as secretaries. 2) elimnates MEDIA SPECIALISTS, PARAPROFESSIONALS, COUNSELORS, VOCATIONAL SUPERVISOR(S), SCHOOL NUTRITION SPECIALISTS, and ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS by title. 3) establishes principals by title only in schools that meet the base size for each category: K-5 with 450; 6-8 with at least 624, and 9-2 with at least 970. According to the proposed rule personnel employed in areas for which the Professional Standards Commissioner issues a certificate shall possess the valid certificate for that position. It is likely that once these position are eliminated, the funds will cease to be a part of the educational budget. There are many responsibilities that will be assumed by principals, teachers, and superintendents should this proposal be approved. The memo continues by encouraging those interested to contact your state school board member. A hearing will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 1995 at the Auditorium of the Ga. Academy for the Blind in Macon, GA. Those who would like to testify at this hearing should sign in upon their arrival. It is also encouraged that if you cannot attend, please send written comments to the following by Dec. 1st (I JUST REC'D THE MEMO ON DEC. 1st BUT PLAN ON WRITING ANYWAY)... Address: Legal Services Georgia Dept. of Ed. 1758 Twin Towers Atlanta, GA 30334 Please share this information with other! Tony Pope
