I need some information. I am a librarian at a small K-6 elementary school in Arkansas. My collection contains 6,000+ volumes. As a part of a self study we did about three years ago my teachers voted to have me set aside a section of high interest low level books for students with reading difficulties. They voted to do this while I was out on maternity leave without first asking my opinion. I believe they pose some valid points but, I do not have the time or space to fulfill their wish. My principal backs my position but the teachers will not back down nor will they help set up such a section. How do you handle this situation at your school? Do you have such a section? If so how do you determine what constitutes such a book? If you have such a section how do you guide students to it without singling them out as having a reading difficulty? Any and all help you can offer will be greatly appreciated as I am going to be appointed to a committee to further study this problem.
