Having had such wonderfully helpful responses to my two most recent posts, I am encouraged to try another: The Reading Specialist and I are putting together some suggestions of strategies teachers might use to challenge advanced elementary grade readers. We have many first and second graders who are reading at a fifth grade (or higher) level and many fifth graders capable of reading at high school levels. We have an exclusively literature-based reading program which stresses self-selection of reading materials. Any suggestions about how teachers in other elementary schools continue to challenge these readers would be helpful.
