Dear Michelle, First of all, I want to introduce myself. My name is John Crowley and I am a Library Media Specialist in a Connecticut high school. I have been involved with strategic planning for the last ten years. Our school was chosen to be part of the High School Futures Consortium of the ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development). The purpose of the consortium was to help schools create strategic planning mechanisms. As a result of this experience and at the request of three publishers and various participants in workshops I have offered, I wrote a book (Developing a Vision: Strategic Planning and the Library Media Specialist) for the LMS when he/she is involved with strategic planning. It is described in the latest SLMQ and was reviewed in various journals, including the May/June issue of Emergency Librarian. It discusses a successful model of strategic planning and how the LMS fits into it. If you're interested, the ISBN is 0-313-28835-6, the telephone number is 1-800-225-5800, and the cost is $35. As far as completing the sentence, above, I would suggest you look at some of the writings of Grant Wiggins and/or Heidi Hayes Jacobs (originally from Utah) in Educational Leadership. Grant is particularly good in performance based assessment and Heidi is wonderful on interdisciplinary tasks or curriculum. Bill Gates' book/CD-ROM is a good discussion starter, as well. You are the first person to use strategic planning as a subject entry in LM_NET. Although I have had to unsubscribe, I always use the gogher search to see if anyone is talking about strategic planning. Good luck, keep in touch. P.S. I had to send this e-mail through the listserv because your e-mail server was not responding. Since I'm suggesting the purchase of my book, I hope I don't get in trouble!
