REF: Hindu marks

     High School Social Studies Teachers wants to know about the
markings Hindus wear on their foreheads:
do only women wear them,
are they various colors,
why are they worn,
what do they mean,
are they of religious or ethnic or class significance?
     I've checked general, reference, Hindu, India, and National Geographic
resources in our high school library and been unable to find anything.
Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks.
