Independence Day, 1826

A student came to me today, wanting to know what kind of celebration was
held on the nation's 50th birthday.  We found out that Sam Adams and Tom
Jefferson corresponded about it--that Jefferson was ill, went into a coma,
and revived enough on July 4 to ask the date, and then died.  But we
couldn't find out what the ceremonies were.  Can anyone help put us on the
right track?
