Richard, Mea She'arim is an area of Jerusalem where the ultra Orthodox
live. It's in the north central part of the new city. The name means "a
hundredfold" and is taken from Genesis 26:12. The men in Mea She'arim wear
long black coats and black broadrimmed hats; the women wear long sleeves,
high collars, long dresses or skirts, and opaque (non-sheer) hose. The
married women wear wigs called sheitels and frequently wear scarves or hats
on their heads. Tourists should not go into Mea She'arim in jeans, shorts,
tank tops, etc. DO NOT drive between sundown on Friday and sundown on
Saturday. Any tour book, such as Fodor's, will give information on Mea
She'arim and will usually show it on the map of Jerusalem. I did not visit
that area when I was in Jerusalem as I only had jeans, sweats, and a skirt
that they would have considered indecent. i.e. it came to just below the
knee.
