I read it and liked it very much, despite some of the soap-opera like circumstances around the friend's story. The book committee I am a member of, The Child Study Children's Book Committee at Bank Street College, was considering it for our annual award. (It was a close runner-up). I did have it in the library before it won the award. A ten-year-old in my school just finished it. She loved it and thought the ending was both sad and a total surprise. Adults who have read it know or are prepared for the fact that Cal's mother is dead; apparently kids do not, because when I asked her, she shushed me so as not to spoil it for the next reader. I will be interested in this discussion. Most of the chat I've read on other lists concerns Smoky Night and the omission of Pink and Say!
